Spindle, Shuttle, Needle
I was lucky to collaborate with talented graphic designer Clara FitzGerald on this project. This was our final project for the Digital Storytelling module in DIT. Our brief was to create an imaginative retelling of a Brothers Grimm fairytale using a mix of video, audio, motion graphics, composite scenes, and text. We decided on this less popular Grimm’s fairytale because we loved how the vision of the golden thread fitted so well with the linear nature of the original story, and for me personally the dressmaking/fashion/crafts element was the biggest selling point.
Our version (read original version) tells the sad story of a little girl left alone in the world to fend for herself. Her life is lonely and colourless except for the beautiful garments that she produces. We tried to achieve a melancholic feel through the use of lo-fi string instrumentals, the monochromatic textured colour palette and the simple line reveal animations. The ending, like in the original fairytale, is a happy one!!!
